Robert Kenneth Callow FRS (1901-1983)

Robert Kenneth Callow was an organic chemist who did pioneering work on steroid hormones at NIMR. Callow joined NIMR in 1929 to work on vitamin D. His interests broadened to include sex hormones and other steroids. After spending 1940-45
in the Royal Air Force, he returned to NIMR to continue his research, including the synthesis of cortisone. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1958. After retiring from NIMR in 1966, Callow worked on insect pheromones at Rothamsted Experimental Station until 1971. He died on 12 April 1983.
