A survey of the NIMR archives was carried out in 2013 by Morwenna Roche. It concluded:
- Due to the unique position of NIMR in UK science, its archival records are of national and international importance.
- Due to the Institute’s pivotal national role and the prominence of NIMR Directors on the broader scientific stage, the archive does not merely document internal NIMR activity but also includes material of much wider significance.
- It is imperative that suitable arrangements are put in place to secure the long-term future of these collections.
- In order to preserve the coherence, integrity and long-term archival value of the collections they should, as far as is possible, be kept together.
A project has been started with the aim of preserving the archives, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements. An archivist has been recruited to work on this project at Mill Hill. Further updates will be forthcoming.
